What is AQIP?
Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) is the regional accreditation process that Glen Oaks participates in through the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association.
Glen Oaks Community College and AQIP
In 1965, the State of Michigan granted approval to Glen Oaks Community College to offer collegiate level courses. The North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools (NCA) conferred full accreditation status upon the college in April 1975. In 1983, accreditation was granted for 10 years, through 1993, and was then extended in two subsequent 7-year periods through 2007.
During the 2000 – 2007 accreditation period, Glen Oaks Community College applied to maintain its accredited status through an emerging program—the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP). The college completed a partnership application and an institutional self-study prior to acceptance into the program.
Launched in 1999 with a grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts, AQIP attempts to infuse the principles and benefits of continuous quality improvement into the culture of colleges and universities by providing an alternative process through which an already-accredited institution can maintain its accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the NCA. With AQIP, an institution has the opportunity to demonstrate it meets HLC accreditation standards and expectations through sequences of events that align with those ongoing activities that characterize organizations striving to improve their performance. By sharing both its advancement activities and the results of these actions with AQIP, an institution provides the HLC with the evidence it needs both to make a public quality assurance judgment and to support and assist the institution in its efforts to excel at achieving the distinctive higher education mission it has set for itself.
Since 2000, Glen Oaks has maintained its HLC/NCA accreditation following the AQIP model. Participation in AQIP Strategy Forums (2001 and 2005), work and annual updates on AQIP Action Projects (2001 to the present), submission of the college’s Systems Portfolios (2004 and 2008), and an on-site Quality Checkup (2007) contributed to renewed accreditation January 2008.
