Athletes receive Jim Bishop Athletic Scholarships

Two student athletes at Glen Oaks Community College were each presented the Jim Bishop Athletic Scholarship in a brief ceremony last Saturday between the Lady and Men Vikings basketball games against Kellogg Community College. Sophomores Naomi Harless of Sturgis and Derek Pyles of Bronson were singled out by Steve Proefrock, Athletic Director and Men’s Basketball Coach, for upholding the high ideals of the Jim Bishop Athletic Scholarship. He said both student athletes maintain over a 3.0 grade point average, have played basketball for Glen Oaks for two years and are captains of their respective teams. Proefrock said the Jim Bishop Athletic Scholarship Fund was established in 1980 after Jim Bishop’s death in an auto accident. Jim Bishop attended Glen Oaks during its first two years of existence and he played on the first basketball team under Coach Ken Schuler, later serving as a coaching assistant for the teams in the 1970’s. Jim’s family funded the scholarship as a way of allowing athletes in St. Joseph County to get an education and play the sport they loved at the same time. “Jim and his family believe athletics are an important aspect of Glen Oaks and of St. Joseph County,” said Proefrock.
