Glen Oaks Community College will soon begin a 150-day, $2.2 million renovation of the 50-year old grand concourse. Members of the community are invited to attend a “Concrete Breaking” event to be held on Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 11 a.m.

The Glen Oaks Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting at 10 a.m. on that morning to finalize a 30-year, 3.385 percent, US Department of Agriculture loan. Frederick Construction, of Vicksburg, Michigan, has been selected as the general contractor to oversee the project. Arkos Design, of Mishawaka, Indiana, was the architect for the project.

“The concourse serves as our ‘student union,’ ” said Dr. David Devier, Glen Oaks president. “And the need for this project has increased as a result of our on-campus housing, for us to be able to provide more activities for our students. Our goal is to transform the current 1960’s brutalist architecture concourse into an inviting, contemporary student and community gathering space.”

Plans call for a total transformation of the space that brings more wood and glass into the facility, and sound-absorbing wave panels in the ceiling to help reduce noise levels.  Features will include a modern-day grand staircase with glass walls and wooden handrails, a 100- seat dining area, meeting rooms and seating areas that will incorporate today’s technology. A proposed new art gallery and restrooms will be renovated as well.

After initial conversation with administration, staff and students, conducted by an architectural firm, the College determined to focus on the concourse area to provide recreational areas for students. Updates to the area will make the space more inviting when students enter the building as well as provide a focal point for students to gather during free time with recreational activities available throughout the day and evening.
