The Certified Medical Assistant is one of the most sought after careers in the healthcare field as a result of the diversity in the skill preparation. The Medical Assistant’s skills are utilized in both the administrative and clinical aspects of the medical office. Phlebotomy, medical administration and surgical assisting are among the many clinical skills acquired in the Medical Assisting Program.
The Glen Oaks Community College Medical Assistant program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB).

Graduates of the accredited program are eligible to sit for the national certification examination. Passing the examination allows the graduate to become a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA-AAMA). The Medical Assistant can further his or her education by earning an Associate of Applied Science in Allied Health. The Medical Assistant Certificate is a competency-based program of study. The job growth rate is expected to be 31% between 2013-20.
2014 Medical Assisting Advisory Board Meeting
Brenda Luczek, MA Program Director, lead the meeting which is held on at least an annual basis to assess the needs of the program by gathering input from the medical community, students, instructors and a Medical Advisor- Dr. Wilson Sawa - a board certified OB-GYN surgeon who has an office with the Sturgis Medical Group.
This year the college hosted two MAERB (Medical Assisting Education Review Board) site surveyors who conducted the ten-year site review for our program. The preliminary findings are: all program standards were met. No citations or adverse findings were reported. The MA program was assessed as having four "exceptional" strengths which will be shared in a larger report after the official letter is recieved from CAAHEP (the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs).
We invite the health community to offer insights, ideas and suggestions to help us constantly assess, update and improve our delivery of education to our Medical Assisting students.
