Dr. George R. Hoekzema Business Studies Scholarship*

Background:Dr. George R. Hoekzema created this Fund by establishing a Trust that upon his death, May 12, 2002 at age 94, a portion of his estate would be donated to the Glen Oaks Community College Foundation to establish theĀ Dr. George R. Hoekzema Business Studies Scholarship.

Dr. Hoekzema was a long-time resident of Colon, Michigan following his graduation from the Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery in 1932. Dr. Hoekzema had practiced general medicine in the Colon area for more than 50 years. He was very active in community groups, the Colon United Methodist Church, and Colon Community Schools. His generosity to Glen Oaks Community College will be greatly recognized and appreciated well into the future.


  • Students must pursue an Associate of Business Degree
  • Students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours or more
  • New students must have a 2.50 G.P.A. minimum in high school
  • Returning GOCC students must have a 2.50 G.P.A.
  • Must be a St. Joseph County resident


  • Full-time student (12 credit hours or more)

Selection Criteria:

  • Financial circumstances, academic ability, and career goals will be taken in consideration in selecting the recipients.

Maintenance Criteria:

  • The recipients of the Dr. George R. Hoekzema Business Studies Scholarship will be expected to maintain a GPA of least 2.50 while receiving the scholarship.

Selection Process:

  • Students will be selected by the scholarship committee based upon the above criteria.


  • The scholarship may be applied to all education related expenses.

Amount and Number of Awards:

  • If possible, a minimum of two students will be awarded $1,000 per year (at full-time) provided the principal is not utilized. The scholarship committee will make final determination of the number and amount awarded based on availability of funds.

Prior Recipients:

  • Prior recipients may reapply, if eligible.


The Office of Financial Aid will disburse the scholarship according to the standard school policy.

If, at any time, the College Foundation policies and procedures in effect for the administration of award and scholarship funds are changed, these provisions are automatically modified to conform.

Whenever it appears that changing conditions make this plan no longer applicable, practical, or suited to the general purposes stated above, the College Foundation would confer with the donor or their representative to secure a modification of the plan. If the Foundation is unable to locate the donor or their representative after reasonable efforts, then the Foundation is authorized to utilize the fund for any other suitable educational purpose, so that the fund will provide the maximum service to the community through the advancement of higher education.
