The DR. PHILIP G. & ISABEL P. WARD / MACMILLAN Scholarship was established by Isabel P. and Dr. Philip G. Ward in memory of Isabel’s parents Angus and Mary MacMillan. Isabel Ward noted that while this scholarship was initially a Nursing Scholarship (due the exceptional care her parents received in their later years), she & Dr. Ward have decided to expand the scholarship to include Education majors. Dr. Ward retired as President of Glen Oaks Community College in 1998 after a long and illustrious career in education. Isabel last taught at Holy Angels in Sturgis.

The Dr. Philip G. & Isabel P. Ward/ MacMillan Scholarship is to be awarded annually to a nursing student entering either Level I or Level II of the Nursing Program at Glen Oaks Community College and/or to a student pursuing an education degree.


For a Nursing Applicant:

  • Acceptance into either Level I or Level II of the nursing Program
  • Students must be enrolled full-time (12 credit hours or more)
  • Financial need may be a consideration if there is more than one qualified applicant

For an Education Applicant:

  • Students must intend to major in education
  • Students must be enrolled full-time (12 credit hours or more)
  • Students must pursue an Associate Arts/Science/General Study Degree
  • Have and maintain a 3.00 G.P.A.

Preference: none

Selection Criteria:

  • Academic ability, financial circumstances and career goals will be taken in consideration in selecting the recipients.

Maintenance Criteria:

  • The recipient will be expected to maintain a 3.00 G.P.A. while receiving the award.
  • The student must be enrolled as a full-time student each semester while receiving the award.


  • The scholarship may be applied to tuition, books, and fees.

Selection Process:

For a Nursing Applicant:

  • Students will be selected by the Director of Financial Aid and the Assistant Dean of the Nursing Programs & Allied Health

For an Education Applicant:

  • Students will be selected by the Foundation Scholarship Committee

Amount and Number of Awards:

  • The Foundation Scholarship Committee will make the final decision based on the availability of funds.

Prior Recipients:

  • Must reapply


The Office of Financial Aid will disburse the scholarship according to the standard school policy.

If, at any time, the College Foundation policies and procedures in effect for the administration of award and scholarship funds are changed, these provisions are automatically modified to conform.

Whenever it appears that changing conditions make this plan no longer applicable, practical, or suited to the general purposes stated above, the College Foundation would confer with the donor or their representative to secure a modification of the plan. If the Foundation is unable to locate the donor or their representative after reasonable efforts, then the Foundation is authorized to utilize the fund for any other suitable educational purpose, so that the fund will provide the maximum service to the community through the advancement of higher education.
