Glen Oaks Board of Trustees makes annual assignments

The Glen Oaks Community College Board of Trustees voted on June 10, 2009 to retain current officer positions. Dr. Paul Schubert was elected Chairperson, along with Pat Haas, Vice Chairperson, Bruce Gosling, Treasurer, James Moshier, Secretary. Others on the Board include David Locey, Ruth Perry and David Allen. Bruce Gosling was elected Representative to the Michigan Community College Association and Ruth Perry will serve as Alternate. The Board also approved meeting dates for the 2009-2010 college year.

The Board congratulated Marilyn Wieschowski, CPA, upon her selection as permanent Chief Operations Officer at Glen Oaks Community College. Wieschowski reported total revenues year-to-date of $10 million, which represents 94 percent of the college’s annual budget. She said the revenue rate as a percentage of budget is approximately two percent behind last year’s revenue rate at this time. Expenses year-to-date were $8.2 million, which represents 78 percent of the annual budget. The spending rate is two percent lower than last year’s rate at this time. The net increase in net assets as of May 31, 2009 is $1.8 million. The budgeted increase in net assets as of June 30, 2009 is $88,000. The College was 91 percent through the fiscal year by May 31, 2009.

Wieschowski said the college budget for the coming fiscal year will remain conservative in respect to revenues and reflects state education allocations that are expected to remain flat. She did say a three-year operations plan will include upgrading some classroom furniture and repainting many rooms. “We’ll be following a scheduled plan over several years,” Wieschowski said of the upgrades.

Dr. Gary Wheeler, President, reported the Medical Assistant program received congratulations and earned continuing accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs upon recommendation of the Curriculum Review Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants Endowment (AAMAE), Chicago, Illinois.

Dr. Wheeler and the Board saw a new short video message which will soon appear on the Glen Oaks Community College website www.glenoaks.edu. The video displays activities at the college and provides an inside look at classrooms, laboratories, sports and other educational areas. Dr. Wheeler said the College is also expecting to move into several social networking areas like Facebook with the help of the Admissions Office. The president said a 2010-2015 Strategic Plan draft calls, in part, for building increased relationships in and outside the college and he asked the Board for their feedback and consideration of the plan.

Glen Oaks Community College will join other public institutions in offering a confidential and anonymous Whistleblower hotline. President Wheeler said the third-party service provides an opportunity to report incidents, behavior, practices, or conditions which are believed to be illegal, unethical, or otherwise threatening to Glen Oaks’ faculty, staff or students. The program includes posters in various locations in the college and a wallet card for each student. Chairperson Dr. Paul Schubert said, “This policy is nice to have in place. It is there if needed, though we certainly hope it gets little use.”

In other action,

  • The Board of Trustees agreed to publish a Notice of Public Hearing on July 8, 2009 for the 2009-2010 Proposed Glen Oaks Community College budget.
  • The Board of Trustees agreed to renew the Millage Levy. The levy remains unchanged and follows previous procedures.
  • The Board of Trustees received an overview of the procedure to be used by Plante Moran, LLC for the coming annual audit of college finances.
