Glen Oaks Community College Partners with St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office to Enhance Campus Security

Glen Oaks Community College is implementing a new three-year security contract with the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office as part of its proactive commitment to enhancing campus safety. Beginning November 18, 2024, the college will have a full-time, armed, uniformed deputy stationed on its campus.

Deputy T.J. Baker will serve as campus safety director, overseeing security operations Monday through Friday. Baker brings experience as both a respected community member and former Glen Oaks adjunct criminal justice instructor to his new role. Baker, who has 15 years of law enforcement experience, including specialized training in campus safety and emergency response, will work in partnership with the college’s human resources office under the oversight of Jamie Yesh, Director of Human Resources.

“This partnership reflects our commitment to creating a safe and secure learning environment for our community,” said Dr. Bryan Newton, president of Glen Oaks Community College. “Deputy Baker’s presence on campus brings a wealth of experience, and we are confident this collaboration will provide peace of mind for everyone who visits or works here.”

As campus safety director, Baker will establish operations in the newly designated campus safety office, converted from the former administrative conference room. His responsibilities include:

  • Supervising part-time security personnel for evening and weekend coverage
  • Testing and maintaining campus safety equipment
  • Serving on the college’s emergency operations committee
  • Conducting safety training and emergency preparedness exercises
  • Coordinating with local law enforcement and emergency services

The college will complement the full-time security presence with additional personnel during nights and weekends. This enhancement is part of Glen Oaks’ comprehensive campus safety strategy, which includes updated surveillance systems, emergency notification capabilities, and regular safety training programs.
