Leaders of Promise Scholar.
“The Coca-Cola Scholarship is open to the entire membership of Phi Theta
Kappa, the academic honorary society for two-year colleges,” said Ben
Fries, Glen Oaks advisor to the organization. “That makes this scholarship
extremely competitive. Hans is our first Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise
Scholar and we are proud to be able to showcase his achievements within
our institution and organization. He was one of 207 recipients selected out
of over 1,100 applicants nationwide.”
The Coca Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship provides new PTK members
with financial resources to help defray educational expenses while encouraging participation of Society
programs. The $1,000 award is based on scholastic achievement, community service and leadership
A second-year student at Glen Oaks, Miller is majoring in General Studies and plans to pursue a four-year
degree in secondary education focusing on math and the sciences.
“I have a passion for working with kids,” said Miller. “I’ve always thought about teaching—my wife is a
teacher, and I enjoyed working with students in the past as part of my missionary experiences.”
Upon high school graduation, Miller worked in construction and he spent a great deal of time in
construction as part of missionary work in other countries.
Miller was inducted in PTK a year ago. An adult student, he is married and has three children and still
manages to find time to coach his sons in Sturgis Little League baseball and volunteer at his church.
