Glen Oaks to launch 50 th anniversary celebration with Flippin’ Flapjack Kickoff

Students, faculty and staff will celebrate the kickoff to the 50 th anniversary of the College on
Wednesday, Jan. 21, on the concourse with a pancake and sausage brunch. However, there’s a twist—
they will have to catch their pancakes before they can enjoy them.

Chris Cakes of Michigan, which is known for its flying pancakes, has been featured on the Food Network, has
served four presidents and 16 governors, and holds the Guinness Book of Records for most pancakes made in
an hour, and for most pancakes tossed and caught.

“We hope the students, faculty and staff will enjoy the entertainment as much as they enjoy the tasty brunch,”
said Val Juergens, executive director of communications and marketing at the College, who is also heading up
the College’s 50 th anniversary events. “This event is the first of a number of activities we have planned as part
of the Glen Oaks 50 th Anniversary Celebration.”

It was on June 14, 1965, that the newly formed board set forth an election to establish a community college,
to fund it with a one and one half mill levy. More than 6,000 voters turned out for the election and approved
the establishment of the funding of a community college district for St. Joseph County by a margin of over two
to one.

In addition to the brunch, other activities planned throughout the year in celebration of this milestone event

athletes will be invited to this event to be recognized between the Women and Men’s basketball games
against Kalamazoo Valley Community College. A special reception will be held for the former Vikings

More details will be forthcoming on the all of the activities and events scheduled on that day.

Other events will include participation in Sturgis Fest Week, Three Rivers Water Festival, and other
