Indiana artist Robert Hoffman named 2009 Artist in Residence at Glen Oaks

Well-known Indiana painter Robert Hoffman is the Artist in Residence, June 15-19, at Glen Oaks Community College. He will teach CEA 273: Painting the Landscape in Oil, Monday through Friday that week, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The workshop class is limited to 14 students and is open to artists and students (entering 9th grade through adult). No experience is necessary. A list of supplies is mailed to registered students and participants may bring their own supplies or purchase them from the Glen Oaks Bookstore. Workshop participants should bring a sack lunch each day. The Flora Kirsch Beck Program Fund helps support the workshop.

Hoffman’s work is included in public, corporate and private collections across the country. He has earned 65 awards and is represented in the Artist’s Den in Valparaiso, the Chesterton Art Gallery, and the Brown County Artist Guild in historic Nashville, Indiana. Hoffman has instructed hundreds over the past 30 years with a competent and caring method of sharing his knowledge. His workshops emphasize composition, linear and aerial perspective, and outdoor lighting. The novice is instructed in the use of materials and equipment and may start with a simple painting setup. Students are taught to look for warm and cool colors to create the feeling of light, energy and depth.

Born in Northwest Indiana, Hoffman studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Art. He also studied under artists Hal Rogoff, Kay Pool, Fredrick Rigley, Ken Gore, Franklin Jones, Jim Pollard and Don Stone. Hoffman is a signature member of the Oil Painters of America. He is an artist member of the Brown County Art Guild, Association of Artist and Craftsmen of Porter County and the Hoosier Salon. His solo shows have been featured by the Northern Indiana Arts Association, Purdue Calumet Bicentennial Library Gallery, the American Bar Association in Chicago, and the Chesterton Art Gallery near his Merrillville, Indiana home.

Previous art instruction has taken him to Hudson River Valley Art Workshops, Greenville, New York, Joseph Art School, Joseph, Oregon, Hilton Head Art League, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, Dillman’s Sand Lake Lodge, Lac Du Flambeau, Wisconsin, Clearwater Art Association, Orofino, Idaho, Spring and Fall workshops in Brown County and dunes workshops on the southern shores of Lake Michigan.

Painting the Landscape in Oil with Robert Hoffman (CEA 273) is offered 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday, June 15-19, 2009 in Room D410 (Art room) at Glen Oaks Community College.
