The Mitchell Baker General Studies Scholarship was established by Sharon Baker in
memory of her son Mitchell Baker.
The purpose of this fund is to provide scholarship support to qualified students in the
general studies or science area at Glen Oaks Community College. This scholarship is to be
awarded to talented students pursuing a General Studies Degree or an Associate of Science
Degree. General Studies is intended as a flexible degree for students who are not in a
specified curriculum in the transfer or professional-technical area, the degree may also be
appropriate for students who are undecided about future educational or career goals.
- Students must pursue an Associate General Studies Degree or an Associate of Science Degree
- Students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours or more
- New students must have a 2.5 G.P.A. minimum in high school
- Returning GOCC students must have a 2.50 G.P.A.
- Must be a St. Joseph County resident
- Full-time student (12 credit hours or more)
- Financial circumstances, academic ability, and career goals will be taken in consideration in selecting the recipients
- Consideration will be given to recommendations from faculty and high school staff
- The recipients of the Mitchell Baker General Studies Scholarship will be expected to maintain a semester GPA of at least 2.50 while receiving the scholarship.
- Students will be selected by the scholarship committee based upon the above criteria.
- The scholarship may be applied to all education related expenses.
- The scholarship committee will make final determination of the number and amount awarded based on the availability of funds.
- Prior recipients may reapply, if eligible.
The Office of Financial Aid will disburse the scholarship according to the standard school policy.
If, at any time, the College Foundation policies and procedures in effect for the administration of award and scholarship funds are changed, these provisions are automatically modified to conform.
The fund is now endowed (as of January 31, 2007) and monies will be held in a restricted endowed account. Distribution will begin in the 2007/08 school years with an additional contribution of $1,000, receipted on February 2, 2007, which will not be part of the endowed
Whenever it appears that changing conditions make this plan no longer applicable, practical, or suited to the general purposes stated above, the College Foundation would confer with the donor or their representative to secure a modification of the plan. If the Foundation is unable to locate the donor or their representative after reasonable efforts, then the Foundation is authorized to utilize the fund for any other suitable educational purpose, so that the fund will provide the maximum service to the community through the advancement of higher education.
