Background:

The Patricia J. Wortinger Nursing Scholarship is being established by Robert Wortinger in memory of his wife Patricia J. Wortinger. Patty was a graduate of Glen Oaks Community College from the Licensed Practical Nursing class of 1973 from there she began working for the Three Rivers Hospital. She had a long and successful career in nursing working a total of 32 years in the health profession field with the last 25 years in the Three Rivers Medical Clinic and later Three Rivers Health, as Primary Nurse for Dr. Donald Schimnoski. Patty truly loved and was devoted to her family, she was a long time member of the Three Rivers community where she was born and raised her family. She was a Three Rivers High Schoo! graduate of 1972 and was very active in her early years in the Band Booster and Girl Scouts.

The purpose of this fund is to provide scholarship support to qualified individuals in their nursing education at Glen Oaks Community College, in addition to functioning as a strong incentive for and a prestigious acknowledgement of excellence in nursing. The scholarship is to be awarded to talented students committed to nursing who plan to complete a degree or certificate. The effect of this scholarship would be to enhance the retention rate for talented nursing students by providing an appealing reason for remaining at Glen Oaks Community College.

Eligibility:

  • Pursuing the Nursing program
  • Any accepted Nursing student, level I & II
  • Students must be enrolled full-time (12 credit hours or more)

Preference:

  • Has a minimum 3.0 GPA from prerequisite coursework
  • Resident of St. Joseph County in-district status

Selection Criteria:

  • Expressed commitment in the nursing career
  • Academic ability, financial circumstances and career goals will be taken into consideration in selecting the recipients.
  • Participation in activities and projects beyond standard class activities may include voluntary commitments to worthy causes.
  • Intention to work in St. Joseph County upon completion of training.

Selection Process:

  • Students will be selected by the Director of Financial Aid and the Director of Nursing of Glen Oaks Community College.
  • Students may be identified out of high school by recommendations of their school counselor, teachers, or Hospital/Medical personnel.

Maintenance Criteria:

  • The recipients will be expected to maintain a semester GPA of at least 2.75 while receiving the scholarship.

Use:

  • The scholarship may be applied to education related expenses.

Amount and Number of Awards:

  • Number and size will be determined by the availability of funds and number of qualified applicants.

  • Must reapply

Disbursements:

  • The Office of Financial Aid will disburse the scholarship according to the standard school policy.

Donors and their immediate families (spouse, child, stepchild, grandchild, step-grandchild, sister or brother) are not eligible for assistance from the scholarship or grant for which they are the primary donor or for whom the fund is named.

This Fund is endowed (as of February 24, 2011) at $10,000 and has been established as a Permanently Restricted endowed account. Distribution will begin in two years following the date it became fully endowed. The Fund will have for immediate distribution $1,160.00 to award in the first two years of its establishment set up as Temporarily Restricted funds where it has also been established with donorĀ­ imposed restrictions that permit the Foundation to use or expend the assets as specified above.

If, at any time, the College Foundation policies and procedures in effect for the administration of award and scholarship funds are changed, these provisions are automatically modified to conform. Whenever it appears that changing conditions make this plan no longer applicable, practical, or suited to the general purposes stated above, the College Foundation would confer with the donor or their representative to secure a modification of the plan. If the Foundation is unable to locate the donor or their representative after reasonable efforts, then the Foundation is authorized to utilize the fund for any other suitable related medical education purpose, so that the fund will provide the maximum service to the community through the advancement of higher education.
