Oaks Community College, with the MCCA Distinguished Service Award last week in Traverse City, Mich., as
part of the MCCA 2013 Awards Luncheon.
The award is in recognition and appreciation of outstanding service and for his leadership as chair of the Board
of Directors for Michigan Community College Association 2012-13.
“Dr. Wheeler presided as chair of the Michigan Community College Association during a year of significant
change and disruption in the community college sector, and we feel very fortunate to have had the steady
guidance and sound counsel that Gary provided during this period,” said Mike Hansen, president of the MCCA.
“His leadership will surely be missed.”
Prior to beginning his presidency at Glen Oaks in 2007, Wheeler was president of Gogebic Community College
in Ironwood, Mich., where he is credited with leading construction of a residence hall on the Ironwood, Mich.
Preceding his presidential role at Gogebic, Wheeler was the associate executive director for the Middletown
Campus of Miami University in Ohio. At Miami, his service included acting executive director of the Middletown
Campus, director of Continuing Education and Business and Industry Center, and professor, American Studies
and Art History. He also served as a Scholar-in-Residence for the Center for American and World Cultures.
Wheeler holds a B.F.A. from the University of Connecticut, a M.F.A. from Arizona State University and a Ph.D.
from Union Institute and University.
During his career, Wheeler has served on various committees and task forces for the MCCA, the Higher
Learning Commission and a number of civic and community organizations.
Wheeler and his wife, Susan, who served as department chair of visual communications at the University of
Cincinnati, have collaborated on a number of academic books and studies on creative and visual design.
