Happel graduated with an Associate of General Studies degree during Glen Oaks graduation ceremony in early May prior to receiving her high school diploma from Mendon. She plans to attend Michigan Technical University this fall to study engineering management and electrical engineering.
Of pursuing both diplomas at the same time, she said “It’s a lot of stress, but it’s worth it in the end. It’s good preparation for going to a four-year university.”
And her hobby of music will help her get there. Happel not only sings, but also plays guitar, bass guitar, drums and piano. She has been playing solo shows in venues from Elkhart to Kalamazoo to raise money for college.
The $1,000 Swartz Scholarship is awarded to a Glen Oaks student with an outstanding record in mathematic courses. Happel was recommended for the scholarship by Glen Oaks mathematics instructors.
Under terms of the scholarship created through a donation by Mr. Bernard Swartz, a former professor of mathematics at Glen Oaks Community College, the student must be transferring to a four-year university after graduating from Glen Oaks. The scholarship is intended to assist a student with educational expenses at a four-year institution.
