Connect with students who understand the first-generation college experience

Being the first in your family to navigate college can bring new opportunities—and new questions. The First Gen Club at Glen Oaks Community College gives first-generation students a place to connect, build confidence, learn from one another, and enjoy college together.

All GOCC students are welcome to join, whether you are a first-generation college student or want to support first-generation students.

What is a first-generation college student?

At Glen Oaks, a first-generation college student is a student whose parent or guardian did not earn a bachelor’s degree before the student turned 18.

If that describes you, you are not alone. First Gen Club is a place to meet other students who may be navigating some of the same experiences, questions, and milestones.

What does First Gen Club do?

First Gen Club creates opportunities for students to connect, learn, and support one another.

Club activities focus on:

  • Building connections with other GOCC students
  • Creating a supportive space for first-generation students and allies
  • Offering social and educational activities
  • Helping members build confidence as college students
  • Sharing experiences, ideas, and helpful campus resources

Activities may vary each semester based on member interests and availability.

Who can join?

First Gen Club is open to all Glen Oaks Community College students.

The club focuses on the experiences of first-generation college students, but you do not have to be a first-generation student to participate. Students who want to support and connect with first-generation students are welcome.

When does First Gen Club meet?

Meeting schedules are determined each semester based on club members’ availability.

The club typically meets about every two weeks and offers both in-person and Zoom participation options when available.

Contact the club advisors for the current semester’s meeting schedule.
