What is MEMCA and the MEMCA Certificate?

The MEMCA (Michigan Early Middle College Association) Certificate provides verification among the Michigan Department of Education, the school district, and the higher education partner that the graduate has successfully completed each of the following:
  1. The State of Michigan Merit Curriculum requirements
  2. A member school’s MEMCA approved College Readiness Curriculum
  3. A minimum of 15 college credit hours (non-remedial courses)

AND one of the following options:

  • 100 hours of verified community services
  • A minimum of 40 hours of verified career exploration, internship, job shadowing, or clinical experience
  • Or a combination of the two that equals 70+ hours
  • MEMCA must endorse the EMC’s Career and College Readiness Curriculum before the school awards the certificate to the student

The Michigan Department of Education therefore accepts these students as early college graduates from their approved EMC program or high school.

Will I ever have to pay for a course?

It depends. If the course(s) you want exceed the dollar amount that the high school is willing to pay, then you would owe a balance (this would be submitted to your high school, not Glen Oaks).

More importantly, if you FAIL a course or DROP it after Glen Oaks’ refund period, you could be responsible for reimbursing your high school.

Do these credits transfer?

Yes! Students have transferred their credits to many institutions across the state and beyond! We always advise students that if they have a school in mind, to contact them and make sure the classes they are taking make sense for the degree/certificate they will be studying in the future.
